GREG HALL

Some writers have such an apparent ease with building a world and inviting you in to tell a story that they make it seems that it takes no work at all. Greg Hall is definitely one of those songwriters, but the relationship between the relative compactness of his songs and the expansiveness of the interiority they provided glimpses into implies that an incredible amount of work goes into finding the right details that can serve as synecdoche for much larger themes.
A warm tonality to his guitar and smooth delivery of his lyrics can sometimes feel as though you’re being transported to a simpler and more understandable era, but that’s when you realize that this art form of telling a story and putting it into a melody is ancient and urgent tradition for a reason. In an era when we don’t seem to have much of a capacity to listen, the slower pace of much of his music helps us connect with what remains of a humanity that seems to be slipping away the more time we spend screen addicted and further removed from the little details that open up Greg’s imagination.
