Background

The Rauchbier is a smoky and malty amber lager, which originated in the city of Bamberg, which is in the Franconian region of Bavaria. There is in an air of mystery surrounding this beer because its origin is known, but the time in which it was first developed is uncertain.

One of the signature—and most appealing—qualities of the Rauchbier is the amount of smokiness that complements the malty flavor. We turned up the volume a bit on the smoke for this beer, and it has a bacon-like quality, which is still true-to-style for this beer and happens to be one of the unique features of Rauchbiers.

What’s in a Name?

The smoky quality to this beer reminds us of camping trips in high school and college, when we first started experiencing beer drinking with our friends. In fact, this beer made us so nostalgic that we paid homage to Mike’s first car—a Buick Skylark—which he may or may not used to hotbox along with his friends.

As elder millennials, our high school and college years fell right at the end of the 1990s and the beginning of a new millennium (thus the generational name). And since this beer is all about nostalgia, we decided to invite our friend Mike Duffy to play a set of cover songs curated for this time period.
